HUNDERTWASSER
of hundertwasser's countless fabulous paintings, quite a few show houses, and some even him, or at least have a reference to his contemplations.
hundertwasser the architect is what i try to present here, by showing three building. the first of these is the hundertwasser art center.
even inside it's very special, like the cafe in which all sorts of funny items are placed.
the second one is the "hundertwasser house", which is what made him world famous. it is rated as an "expressionist landmark". he realized his design together with the architect krawina. it was built 1983-1985, as an apartments building. features include: no rectangular rooms, undulating floors, a roof covered with earth and grass and trees, some trees growing from inside the rooms, and so on. btw, hundertwasser took no payment for the design of the house, saying "it was worth it".
this very unconventional and truly eccentric apartment complex is seen as a masterpiece of hundertwasser. the austrian government and viennese administration can only be praised to make this possible.
the third one, and certainly the most stunning one, is the "spittelau power station". seeing it let you doubt - is this extraordinary architecture an actually working power station? yes it is. and that politicians and administrations let him build it is in a way even more a wonder.
postscriptum 1 the real name of this absolutely outstanding visual artist and architect was friedrich stowasser - but he used a pseudonym, friedensreich regentag dunkelbunt hundertwasser (which means: peace country, rain day, dark coloured, hundred waters).
postscriptum 2 hundertwasser lived for many years on a ship in new zealand, named by him "regentag".
after his death it was moved to austria and is now moored in tulln, were i could visit it.
