GUILIN - BRIEF ESSAY
The city Guilin (formerly romanized as Kweilin) is located on the west bank of the river. Because of its long history, and the unique landscape nearby, it is one of the most visited cities of China.
On both sides of the river are chains of mountains, all slim and steep, and appearing almost weird. Ship tours on the Li target the main peaks.
A very special target near Guilin are the "Reed flute" cave and the "Seven star" cave. Both have lots of unique limestone formations. Most sections are lit with colour lights - which is both attractive and tasteless.
By the way - I, and my partner, did rent bicycles to go to the main cave, and therewith enjoyed a country excursion. After finishing the cave visit my bicycle was blocked, because its locking did not work anymore. Urghhh! I then rented a ute to carry me and my bicycle back to the city, where the bike had to be returned. And then taking a fast taxi to the airport,to reach the booked flight, justtt in time!
Guilin is not just a "modern" city, it's full of 'traditional' quartiers as well.
Walking around there, and looking into plain old-fashioned shops, was even more fun than "shopping" in contemporary areas!
