the republic indonesia is very large - at least regarding its islands, there are 17000! the main ones are borneo, java and sumatra. the population is 267 mio. indonesia's capital is jakarta, a huge city. java was settled since at least 3000 b.c. very many kingdoms or the like developed there. around 1300 a.d. the buddhist and the hindu religions were overrun by muslim faiths. from around 1600 a.d indonesia became a dutch colony. after ww-2 it achieved independence, and eventually settled for a democratic rule..
