MOSCOW:
METRO STATIONS
moscow's metro is one of the largest
underground railway networks in the world, containing 12 lines with 172
stations; the trains are running in a 1.5 minute pattern. its
construction began 1935. most of the earlier stations are built
in a very elaborated style, e.g., the majakowskaja,
komsomolskaja, marx prospect, swerdlowa, rewoljuziji and taganskaja
stations. they are full of art decorations - such as paintings,
mosaics, sculptures and stained glass, created in many styles,
including traditional motives, 'socialist realism', art deco, and steel
designs. several of the paintings show significant events of the
russian history, such as a battle at the kreml, or lenin as orator on
the 'red square'! some stations contain splendid candelabers, almost
like a palace! finally, the station ceilings are often beautifully lit
and decorated. in sum, there's certainly no other metro like the
moscow one!
