... outside the rivers, the major landscape is a tundra - in
winter kilometers of snow fields, enriched with small forests or
single trees. nenets which are still nomads live in large tents,
called chum, which have a fireplace in the middle. transport
means used to be sledges pulled by rendeers, yet nowadays
powerful snow scooters are dominating. the rendeer herds seen in
the tundra are substantial. in winter local people go on frozen
lakes and enjoy "ice-fishing".
in naryan-mar, which has a large russian population, an orthodox
cathedral was built, with an impressive iconostatis inside. yet
some small villages are mostly inhabited by nenets people. the
kids there learn russian but also their own language.
