KAMCHATKA: LANDSCAPE, FLORA, FAUNA (a preview)

here is a preview ... the kamchatka peninsula is a 1000
kilometer long peninsula in the russian far east. the
capital city is petropavlovsk-kamchatsky. it was founded
in 1740 by the explorer vitus bering, a danish ship
captain, serving in the russian navy. at the present
time the city has about 150000 residents.
kamchatka has a wide variety of landscapes. the main
feature are 160 volcanos, of which 20 are active. the
largest one is 4750 m high.
regarding its flora, a wide range of trees, flowering
shrubs, grasses and flowers can be seen in forests and
tundras. regarding the fauna, countless brown bears and
huge amounts of salmons in the rivers are most
prominent. along the coast and on the many islands, a
vast number of birds reside, including puffins. in the
sea, several types of seals, orcas and whales are very
common.
