in norway, since about 1000 the
vikings built for several hundred years unique wooden
churches. such a church is called "stavkirke". it is based
on timber framing, using long beams as central posts.
almost all decorations and sculptures are made from wood
as well. a famous one is the heddal stavkirke in telemark.
about 30 buildings survived and have heritage status.
