the city of bergen is the second
largest in norway and was founded about 1000 years ago, in
1020. it is the country's largest harbor. until 1280,
bergen was the capital of an early norwegian monarchy.
from 1350 to 1630 bergen became an important member of the
"hanseatic league", a large group of trade towns in
germany and other north-european countries. the pertinent
part of bergen's premier harbor, called bryggen, is a
protected world heritage site since 1979.
sailing has a long tradition in this region. norway's
largest classical sailship, "statsraad lehmkuhl", is
registered in bergen. during the annual "tall ships
races", bergen is a main location.
