the city "whanganui" is located at the south-west coast of new zealand's northern island.
it's named after the river which there reaches the ocean. i've visited it in july 2023, as part of a trip to hamilton, cambridge and palmerston-north.
in the following city plan the center is presented, including the bridge over the river.
this town was founded in 1840. many industrial and farm facilities soon flourished. sailships went there, and a bridge crossing the river was built.
whanganui had an electric trams network from 1908 to 1950. one remaining tram is now in a pertinent museum facility.
travellers often come to see the impressive historic buildings, like this one.
this is actually the well-known "rutland arms", excelling in its restaurant (including a great bar) and in its accommodation.
the historic cbd of whanganui still has many traditional buildings.
whanganui has both, an opera house and a large art museums where historic and temporary pieces are presented.
whanganui also has a stunning glass work factory whith two glowing ovens, where a wide variety of "arty" glass pieces is produced.
in the art museum, as on some buildings in the city, are cute paintings which shall memorize history.
there are many .... here i show just one service, because i was a happy customer - hairdress salons, some of traditional set-up, and all of high standard.
amazingly - whanganui still has an historic paddle steamer, operating in summer months on the river. to do this is a "must"!
to sum up - - well, whanganui is only a small city, and not (yet) much known - - yet it is full of special features, and therewith certainly worth a visit!
