the place macau, on a peninsula from china, was the first european colony in asia. it lies 65 km west of hong kong and was established by portuguese traders in 1557. macau stayed under portuguese administration for 442 years until china took it back officially in 1999. however, it is a "special administrative region of china" and maintains some of its social settings. i visited macao in 2002.
