AMMAN
Jordan's largest, and in every regard dominant city is its capital Amman, which has a population of circa 4 mio people.
The first city in the area of Amman was "Ain Ghazal", around 7000 BC. In the 13th century BC, Amman was the capital of the Ammonite Kingdom. The Nabatean kingdom may have controlled it in the 4th century BC. After Alexander The Great, the Macedonian ruler of Egypt occupied and rebuilt the city, naming it "Philadelphia". From 64 BC onwards, Amman was for 4 centuries part of the Roman Empire. Later followed the Islamic era (7th-15th centuries), then the Ottoman Empire, until 1920.
