TRAINS & ROADS

hong kong is a pretty large place, consisting of hong kong island (and some 200 further islands), kowloon peninsula and the so-called new territories in the north. hk's 7 million people move around a lot - which is easy, because the public transport system is highly developed and very efficient! (i'd better not compare with melbourne...) it began with the kowloon-canton-railway (kcr) which used to go straight to the harbour ferries; the clock tower of the terminal station is still standing, now part of the art district. the modern kcr is incredibly well organized - there is a train every few minutes, they stop at exact positions on the platform, and no coins or tickets are needed, payment is done with some kind of a credit card ... the metro is organized similarly, with an even better info display in the carriages ...

on hong kong island both metro and modern buses serve the main routes, and the old double-decker trams (very slow and noisy yet fun to ride) are still going as well ... there are three tunnels between kowloon and hong kong island but no bridges. however, huge bridges connect kowloon with lantau, where hong kong's new airport was built a few years ago (the hypermodern airport train takess just 24 min's from downtown). these are impressive constructions - and beautiful as well, at least in this traveller's eyes!
