another historic town near mannheim is speyer, situated at the rhine as well (see area map in gallery mannheim). it is best known for its monumental cathedral (a 130 m long romanesque structure in the shape of a latin cross, built almost 1000 years ago) ... there are many more churches, plus a large tower (which belonged to the city walls and was the main gate) and many old houses ...
