most of the few remaining buildings of berlin's beginning (some 800 years ago) were built from brick, such as the nikolai church ... much later, in the late 19th century, brick architecture became a fashionable style again and was used a lot for both private and public buildings - the best-known one is the (former) townhall, "rotes rathaus" ...
