most of equador's railway lines has been destroyed by land slides, or just given up by the hopeless authorities … thus you can't travel by rail over the equator anymore in equador (north of quito is a monstrous monument to make it visible and visitable) … most routes are served by buses now, ranging from frighteningly old to almost modern models … but there is still the famous railway line from riobomba to alausi - which includes a famous track through steep mountains ... once a week or so a 4-hour trip can be done, and various types of seating are available in this rather historic train -- see what an excellent view over a grand landscape this traveller has!
