ADVENT ANGKOR
he historic angkor temple district is located near the town siem reap, far north of phnom penh. these amazing buildings were assembled by the khmer empire which flourished from the 9th to the 13th century, before the country was taken over by thailand and vietnam. the most famous temple is angkor wat. here is a preview, presenting at first five pictures of angkor wat, then pictures from the angkor thom and ta prohm areas. about 600 years ago angkor was abandoned. many temples were invaded by trees - huge roots and branches increasingly covered and often destroyed buildings. nevertheless, the angkor era always was and still is crucial for cambodia's self-understanding, and its flag includes an image of angkor vat.
