and which instruments? bass? yes. bassoon? yes. guitar? yes. yet this year's long-planned focus shall be the teniralc!! and three ixcillint musos will give their very best to get the unique and so very rich sound of this wonderful instrument in your ears and eyes.
furthermore, there will be an old chap to lagshare, oops, to lecture a bit about the history and the essence of the teniralc within the wide world of marvelous music. finally, a very unexpected deed is due -- to lionize what you hear with something you will see!

the program

the 2016 music night was completely focussed on the clarinet - -its history, its significance, its vividness! the program consisted of 4 parts: classical music band, essay about the role of the clarinet in music, traditional jazz band, and ballet dancing linked to the music of the bands. in both bands a clarinet was the crucial instrument. for each part of the program selected pictures and messages follow below.

the "clarinet" essay

the essay, presented by me, covered three topics: ? the history of the clarinet, ? a personal clarinet story, ? the role of the clarinet in music. this was illustrated by many images. in the following, only a selection is given.

<1> the history of the clarinet

/// music anthropologists found out that double clarinets and hornpipes are the earliest ones because of their melody pipe with finger holes and because of played with a reed. the oldest images of these instruments are from the egypt empire at least 3000 years ago.
/// much much later, in the 16th century, in france a new instrument was developed, called chalumeau. german instrument builder johann denner equipped it with two keys, which cover tone holes out of reach for the fingers.

/// this innovation happened in 1710 - - it was the 'birth" of the clarinet!
/// in 1839 finally the still ruling real clarinet was developed. all holes either have an open metal ring, or a closing felt pad. all holes out of reach for the musician's fingers are handled by keys.

two different key systems were established, both in use, one is labeled "albert".and one "boehm"

<2> a personal clarinet story

/// a man called beronado has a story - he says that he bought a clarinet in 1957 and played it with pleasure til 1962. dealing with some slight disbelief, he showed his georgous clarinet box to all, opened it and put the pieces together -- there it was, his clarinet!

/// of course this old clarinet is very frail nowadays, yet it was certainly solid in those times - he was a member of the local firebrigade orchestra, as you may see here!

<3> the role of the clarinet in music

/// this is a big issue, far too big for a little essay. so just core aspects...
/// for 200 years now, the clarinet is essential in symphony orchestras and in chamber music. and this the reason that a classical music band was the first section of mmeff-2016.

/// important composers creating clarinet music.include: above all mozart, yet also beethoven, gershwin, brahms, .tchaikovsky.

/// of course there are countless grand clarinet players. within classical music, two of my personal favourites are sabine meyers (germany) and husnu senlendirici (turkey).

/// beside classical music, the clarinet is important in folk music, such as turkish music, gypsy music, klezmer music and so on.

/// yet the biggest role of the clarinet was in jazz, a new music style which developed in new orleans (usa) from 1900 onwards. the first ever record of a jazz band happened in 1917.

/// the most famous band in new orleans and then chicago, and the most influential one, was the king oliver band. here is a picture which shows louis armstrong, lil hardin and johnny doods.

================================================================================

/// in my (of course biased) view, dodds was the crucial artist to shape the role of the clarinet in jazz, as member of armstrong's hot-5 and hot-7, as well as his own bands.

/// later, in the time of swing jazz, the clarinet became amazingly popular, and many big bands were led by a clarinet player, above all the benny goodman orchestra.

/// again, this is my personal (and once more biased) view - - benny goodman is/was the most proficient and the most respected clarinet player, a musician who excelled for decades in jazz yet also recorded top classical music, such as mozart's compositions!

all this was the reason that a jazz band was the second band of mmeff-2016, following the classical band at the beginning.

the jazz music

jazz was presentend by this trio - joshua, sam and hiroki, all living in melbourne.

joshua kelly sam o'halloran hiroki hoshino

they presented a variety of tunes related to traditional jazz and to swing, including hot-5 & hot-7 pieces (that's where johnny dodds was the clarinet player) and tunes from swing jazz, including the benny goodman band.

the difference to the presentation of the classical band was considerable - - and this was the principle underlying this music night, namely, to showcase the enormous width of music which is played on a clarinet!

the ballet dancing

at the end of the performance of both bands, a dancer danced for two tunes, kate. this was a real surprise to the guests - they expected just music!

kate douglas

kate actually changed her dress between her two dancing sessions. the nature of her dances differed as well, for the classical and the jazz music.

and this ended "my music events for friends"

the venue

the venue had to change, it's now the "rhapsody café".

also, i mounted several images about clarinet music at two walls; here are some of those:

to steer the enormous and pretty complex event, i created my own "attemption-please-bell" and certainly used it through the whole evening.

my essay about the history and the significance of the clarinet (summarized above) i illustrated with many images, all framed, in a3 or a4 size, and julia lostrom presented them.

and at the end of this rather grand affair, roula lostrom, the lady who runs this café, and hosted us,

got an odd peculiar little gift, to express our appreciation & gratefullness - - of course a music tool!
